Ninety years ago, leading feminists such as Rosa Manus, Johanna Naber and Willemijn Posthumus-van der Goot decided that the history of the women’s movements must not be lost. Their initiative led to the establishment of the International Archive for the Women’s Movement (IAV). Behind these well-known names, however, lay a much larger network of passionate women, both locally and internationally. But who were they? Which women played a crucial role without receiving any recognition for it? And why do we know so little about them today?
During this writing afternoon, we’ll delve into their stories and help bring these women to the fore on Wikipedia. In this way, we’ll work together to contribute to a more complete and inclusive picture of history.

12.30 – 1.00 pm: Doors open
1.00 pm: Welcome and introduction
Luna Heppener – who, as an intern at Atria, conducted research into the founding of the IAV – will talk about the forgotten women involved in the establishment of the International Archive of the Women’s Movement and explain why their stories deserve to be told.
1.30 pm – 4.00 pm: Wikipedia editing session
Under the guidance of experienced Wikipedia contributors, you’ll learn how to contribute to the world’s largest online encyclopaedia.
We’ll provide you with names, sources and background material so you can get started straight away. Prefer to do your own research? Then have a browse through Atria’s (digital) collection and write about another woman who deserves greater visibility.
Do you have experience with Wikidata, the open knowledge base behind Wikipedia? If so, you can contribute by adding details about people, organisations and journals linked to Atria’s collections.

The writing afternoon is suitable for both new and experienced Wikipedia contributors. No experience is required: anyone who wants to help bring forgotten gender history to light is welcome. Participation is free, but registration is required.
