Biographical Note / Biografie

Born August 20, 1881 in Amsterdam as Rosette Susanna Manus, died in 1942; active in the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) since 1908, from 1926 named International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship (IAWSEC) and from 1946 International Alliance of Women (IAW); organised with Mia Boissevain the Exhibition 'Woman 1813-1913' (Tentoonstelling 'De Vrouw 1813-1913'); co organiser of the International Congress of Women (Internationaal Congres van Vrouwen) in The Hague 1915; close friend of Carrie Chapman Catt, with whom she travelled through Europe and Latin America in 1922-1923; Vice President of the IAW since 1926, Secretary of the Peace Committee in 1926 en from 1926 President of the in that year established Women Police Committee of the International Alliance of Women; she was Secretary and later Vice President of the Peace and Disarmament Committee of the Women's International Organisations, also called Dingman Comité after its President Mary Dingman, which was founded for the disarmament conference of the Liaison Committee of Women's International Organizations; Rosa Manus organised the petition of more than 9 million signatures; she was the Secretary of the peace conference of the Rassemblement Universel pour la Paix (RUP) in Brussels 1936; co founder of the Dutch Women Electricity Association (Nederlandse Vrouwen Electriciteits Vereniging) in 1932 and of the International Archives for the Women's Movement (Internationaal Archief voor de Vrouwenbeweging, IAV) in 1935 of which she became the first president; board member of the in 1938 established Corps Female Volunteers (Korps Vrouwelijke Vrijwilligers); in 1941 arrested and imprisoned in Scheveningen because of her pacifism and alleged communism; eventually transported to the concentration camp Ravensbrück; Myriam Everard established that she was gassed in a sanatorium in Bernburg in March 1942; see Myriam Everard and Francisca de Haan (eds), Rosa Manus (1881-1942). Custodial History

In the beginning of 1936 Rosa Manus donated about 300 books from her library to the International Archives for the Women's Movement; among these books were books original from Aletta which Manus had received in 1930 and had added to her library; in later years she donated more books; 'In the first months of 1940, she brought all documents and letters which she had collected in the past thirty years of her involvement with the women's movement in tranches to the IAV, thinking they would be safer there than at her own place, an operation which she completed in the first days of May' (Myriam Everard in Rosa Manus (1881-1942) (2017), p. 283; already on 12 July 1940 the German occupier closed the IAV at Keizersgracht 264 in Amsterdam and took everything away, including the papers and books from Rosa Manuswere looted with everything else from the International Archives of the Women's Movement, Keizersgracht 264 in Amsterdam in July 1940. In 1992 it became known that (part of) the archives of the IAV had ended up in a 'secret archive' in Moscow, to be finally returned to Amsterdam in 2003; a large part were Rosa Manus's papers, and most of the hundreds of photographs originated from her; the more than 33.000 documents were in disorder and it was not always easy to arrange the documents properly.
